I-395 Highway Closure Due to Miami Bridge Construction
The prominent highway redevelopment project in Miami, designed with the intention of improving traffic flow on crowded city streets, seems to be causing more congestion instead. This is primarily due to large-scale road expansions leading to significant road closures on Sundays and Mondays. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has recently announced that there will be closures on all eastbound I-395 lanes at I-95 from 10:30 p.m. Sunday evening to 5:30 a.m. Monday morning. Additionally, I-95 ramps to eastbound I-395 and the Biscayne Boulevard ramp to the MacArthur Causeway will be closed. These closures, as stated by the FDOT, are temporary measures to reroute traffic from I-395 eastbound to the right, following Biscayne Boulevard. This will enable the opening of a new construction work zone.
This construction project is a component of the mega I-395/SR 836/I-95 Design-Build Project, which comprises the development of the Signature Bridge and a two-level segment of SR 836. This project, costing an estimated $840 million, is a subject of controversy and is predicted to reach completion in late 2027. However, many local citizens remain sceptical. The recent road closures might lead to serious traffic congestion in areas like Overtown, sections of downtown, and Miami Beach.
The department advises that drivers follow the detours listed below.
