TotalEnergies Considers Julian Alaphilippe as Possible New Sagan
The manager of TotalEnergies, Jean-René Bernaudeau, has hinted at a possible future for two-time World Champion, Julian Alaphilippe, with their team. This comes amid the expiration of Alaphilippe’s contract with Soudal-QuickStep in 2024 and recent disagreements with team manager, Patrick Lefevere.
The ongoing conflict between Alaphilippe and his current team’s boss has presented an opening for TotalEnergies to propose a place for the renowned French rider. Amid criticizing remarks regarding Alaphilippe’s personal life and performance by Lefevere, Marion Rousse, Alaphilippe’s partner, called for increased respect and decorum.
Bernaudeau revealed the potential for Alaphilippe being integrated into TotalEnergies’ strategy to focus more on French talent, similar to the model employed with other experienced stars like Peter Sagan, Niki Terpstra, and Edvald Boasson Hagen. The objective is to uplift the French ProTeam’s reputation while also encouraging new prospects, particularly given the scarcity of wildcard invitations to substantial non-French events.
Using Sagan’s influence on TotalEnergies as a reference point, Bernaudeau underscored the positive effect seasoned riders have on the team’s morale. Sagan’s efforts, inclusive of financial aid, have boosted the team’s performance, instilling a sense of pride. A rider of Alaphilippe’s stature is viewed as a crucial leader and role model for upcoming cyclists, augmenting the emphasis on promoting French riders.
If Alaphilippe shifts to TotalEnergies, he would have access to the Tour de France, due to the team often obtaining wildcard invitations. Despite this, his presence at all WorldTour races wouldn’t be compulsory as Israel-Premier Tech and Lotto Dstny have secured automatic wildcard invitations for the 2024 season.
Bernaudeau clarified that TotalEnergies’ aim isn’t confined to the World Tour; holding one of the top two spots in the Second Division offers benefits without race invitation dependency. Alaphilippe’s remaining timetable with Soudal-QuickStep comprises Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico, Milan-San Remo, and Belgium’s cobbled Classics, after a tough Opening Weekend.
As Alaphilippe’s term with Soudal-QuickStep nears its end, TotalEnergies anticipates the chance to embrace the two-time World Champion into their team set-up, fostering an environment conducive to his skills and leadership.
