Truck Driver in Fatal Miami Collision with Jaklin Sabag Not Charged

The Miami Police Department (MPD) has confirmed that the dump truck driver, who was involved in a fatal collision with a woman on Valentine’s Day in Edgewater on Biscayne Boulevard, will not face charges. While walking her baby across the road, Jaklin Sabag, 33, was hit with her baby in the stroller amidst heavy traffic at approximately 12:40 p.m. on February 14. She was trapped under the truck and unfortunately passed away on the spot. The baby survived the crash, though knocked out of the stroller. The infant remained safe in the carrier and was saved by an onlooker who moved the child out of harm’s way, stated MPD spokesman Michael Vega. After a thorough investigation, including surveillance videos, eyewitness accounts, and driver’s interview, the authorities have found no fault on the driver’s part. “The ongoing inquiry, at present does not indicate any error on the driver’s part,” communicated Vega.
Prior to the unfortunate incident, the truck driver was stationed at NE 21st Street amidst traffic, driving down Biscayne in a 2019 Volvo dump truck. As per MPD, Sabag walked into the center of the road, without using a crosswalk, right in front of the truck. She hesitated in the truck’s path, possibly waiting for the incoming traffic to pass by. The initial investigation carried by MPD showed that due to this, she went unnoticed by the driver when he started moving again when traffic cleared, and accidentally hit Sabag. “Given the detectives’ expertise, it is likely that the driver didn’t have her in his sight,” explained Vega. The driver sensed an unpleasant incident as he noticed people rushing towards the location.
Sabag was the co-owner of an apartment with her partner in Elysee Edgewater Miami Condominium, located a block away from the accident site. The information on her social media account states her affiliation with Boston University and her origins traced back to New York City. She was known to be a financial analyst and investment portfolio manager in New York, as per her professional profile. A woman acquaintance, a member of the local mothers’ online group, paid a tribute by leaving flowers at the accident site. “I, myself and other moms in the area, stroll our babies here every day; it could have been any one of us,” she mentioned in an interview with NBC6. As per NBC6, Jaklin’s father expressed sorrow describing her as a “beautiful person”. Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital attended Jaklin’s infant, who was taken there as a precaution. They released the baby after confirming no serious injuries from the accident.
