Initial Story:

Miami Open, one of the biggest tennis tournaments outside of the four grand slam events, has joined the growing trend of pickleball. Major League Pickleball (MLP), a league that runs professional pickleball tours, is set to host a 16-team tournament at the Miami Open from March 27-29. A wheelchair tennis tournament featuring four-time Paralympic gold medalist, Shingo Kunieda of Japan, will also take place from March 26-28 at the Miami Open. “We’re excited to welcome both wheelchair tennis players and MLP stars to this year’s Miami Open presented by Itaú,” said James Blake, Miami Open tournament director. “Our goal is to continue enhancing the festive mood synonymous with the Open and we’re proud to be the first elite event to feature top wheelchair tennis and pickleball players for our audience.” After the grand slam tournaments–the U.S. Open, French Open, Australian Open, and Wimbledon, the Miami Open and Indian Wells Open in California are highly regarded championships attracting high-quality players from both the men’s and women’s events. This year’s Miami Open will be hosted at the Hard Rock Stadium from March 17-31. Recently, Miami has become a hot spot for pickleball. The inaugural Pickle Games were held at Miami Marine Stadium in mid-January, which included spotlight matches played on a floating barge. With the tennis community embracing pickleball, the Pickleball Slam is set to return to Hollywood’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Sunday, being broadcasted on ESPN. Tennis icons John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, and Maria Sharapova will compete for a total reward of $1 million. Miami Open will take place from Sunday, March 17, to Sunday, March 31, at Hard Rock Stadium, 347 Don Shula Dr., Miami Gardens; miamiopen.com.
