Delta CEO to Exclude Unions in Company Operations
More than 140 representatives in the House signed a letter urging Delta Air Strains CEO, Ed Bastian, to desist from interfering in union organization efforts. They wrote the letter following the announcement of a unified movement to form a union by Delta’s staff, which includes flight attendants and fleet service personnel, in November 2022.
The lawmakers highlighted instances reported by their constituents regarding Delta’s past attempts to quash union formation by threatening employees’ benefits, disseminating anti-union documents, and operating an anti-union website. The authors of the letter urged Bastian to consider a neutrality agreement regarding union organization activities and emphasized its essence in ensuring workers’ freedom to form unions.
The letter encouraged Bastian to adopt a neutrality agreement regarding attempts to unionize by his employees and to commit to negotiating fairly if employees chose to unionize. The letter’s timing coincides with picketing activities organized by flight attendants from some of the nation’s biggest airlines at more than 30 airports in the U.S, the U.K., and Guam. They are demanding equitable contracts that include significant pay raises, led by the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) union.
A page on the AFA’s website states, “Flight Attendants are working harder and longer than ever under some of the most challenging working conditions ever experienced.” The page adds that some flight attendants have not received a raise in five years and that working conditions and wages have been worsened by the pandemic’s operational difficulties and boosted cost of living.
Minnesota’s Rep. Ilhan Omar (D), a signatory of the Monday letter, commented on the picketing action on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Tuesday. Omar made a clarion call for just remuneration for flight attendants in light of the massive profits their labor generates.
